Wacker Chemie AG has developed in cooperation with customers from polymeric binder powders and starch or flour-biodegradable plastic products. With the polymeric binders of the brand Vinnex ® can be produced in conjunction with renewable raw materials called polymer blends, such as commercial thermoplastics by injection molding, extrusion, vacuum or thermoforming can be processed. This now allows WACKER, starch or flour in polymer blends with Vinnex ® as a plastic produced from petroleum to process and then through industrial composting to degrade completely bio. The new polymer blends are suitable for example as material for Packaging, catering products and for gardens and landscaping. As biopolymers called polymers based on renewable raw materials and bio-and petroleum-based polymers that are biodegradable. Biopolymers are considered as promising and viable alternative to the conventional products of the petrochemical industry. So far, however, prevented partially unsatisfactory material properties of their widespread use, because the processing performance in almost all pure biopolymers is not comparable with standard thermoplastics.
A solution offer so-called polymer blends - a mixture of synthetic and natural polymers, where the renewable resource with a share of at least 65 percent of the principal component represents. Combined with WACKER's polymer based on vinyl acetate binder system Vinnex ® are generated from renewable resources such as starch, polylactic acid (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) polymer blends, the properties individually set and various synthetic polymers can be aligned.
The resulting biopolymers with a Vinnex ® content between five and 30 percent as commercial thermoplastics by injection molding, extrusion, vacuum or thermoforming and calendering be processed. In addition, the formulations of the polymer blends can be adjusted so that on unmodified thermoplastic machines can be processed, so that no additional investment in plastics processing are necessary.
The biggest advantage of the novel polymer blends is their biodegradability: Composting experiments have shown that Vinnex ® is used in these blends according to the standard DIN EN 13432 decomposed within 180 days through industrial composting. Another advantage of the new biopolymers is the ability to use flour as a main component. In contrast to starch requires the production of flour fewer process steps and thus less energy, so that the CO2-balance much more sustainable fails. For starch-modified polymers WACKER already holds patents.
